This CAN’T be happening!

And then…My parents (sorry Jeremy, you get the next post)!

My entire life, my parents have tried to get me to read.  At one point my dad bought me a speed reading course on cassette tape.  This was in High School when I had my own “cool” room and wanted to make it even cooler with a TV entertainment center.

My dad bought me the entertainment center.  He put it in my room and then he said, “Son, you complete that speed reading course and you can open and put together the entertainment center.”  Wow, this was not fair.  I wanted the entertainment center so bad because I already had the TV and VCR and Stereo, I just needed some place to put it.

I started the course, cassette one finished.  I thought to myself, “I understand what they want me to do I will just teach myself.  I won’t waste my time on these cassettes, all I have to do is read many words at once.  I can do that.

Well, I could, but I didn’t.  Somehow, I convinced my dad to let me have the entertainment center.  I think it was when it sat in my room for over 6 months wasting away.

I continued through college and never had a desire to read.  I didn’t read.  I think this made college much more difficult, but who cares, I wasn’t reading.

Last year, I became a huge fan of Josh Hamilton.  Josh Hamilton is a Major League Baseball player for the Texas Rangers.  Has an incredible story to tell and I wanted to hear it.  I spent hours reading internet articles about the guy so someone (my parents) felt the urge to get me the book for Christmas.

I thought to myself.  “Now I know they hate me!  This is the worst possible Christmas present EVER!  A book?  Really?  Everyone knows I hate reading!”

Out of courtesy I began reading the book to say I tried.  A very strange thing happened.  I couldn’t put it down.  I finished the book in less than a week.  I took the book everywhere.  I even took the book to David’s Bridal while my wife was trying on dresses for my sisters wedding.

This is not right!  I couldn’t be enjoying reading could I?
